Chains of Hope
FSH recently took part in a peaceful demonstration to call attention to a new United Nations report that examines the U.S. government’s record on human rights and race in regards to health problems with the farm worker community.
Florida farmworkers are asking the United Nation to investigate what they say are medical conditions caused by pesticide poisoning.
The laborers frequently handled pesticides that were later found in hundreds of dead birds near Lake Apopka in 1997. Workers say they didn't understand how dangerous the chemicals were and they weren't taught how to handle them.
And a report by the Farmworkers Association of Florida identified common chronic health conditions among workers -- cancer, lupus, congestive heart failure, kidney failure. Workers say the decades of chemical exposure are to blame.
